Jesus witnessed one on one
This message points to the admonitions of the Lord, that those who worship God must worship him in spirit and in truth; because God is a Spirit. The God we serve has no beginning and no end; he is a Spirit, he has these attributes; he is omnipresent (present everywhere), omniscient (all knowing), omnipotent (all powerful), omnibenevolent (all good), transcendent (outside space and time), oneness (being one and only).
The Samaritan woman, non Jewish and therefore not directly of Abraham’s children is the center of this message. She heard of the coming Messiah and that his name will be Christ, John 4:25. Our Lord during his earthly ministry came to and of the Jewish people, because salvation is of the Jews. The original promise of the coming of Christ was given to the Jews. They were the only ones through the scriptures who would be able to understand the prophecies of old, about the messiah. Jesus left Judaea to go into Galilee but must pass through Samaria and that was how he came across the Samaritan woman at the well.
This well was dug by Jacob of Isaac and of Abraham, but the Samaritans at this time used the well. The Lord stopped at this well, wearied from the journey and his disciples went to the city to buy meat. The woman met Jesus at the well, where she had come to fetch water. Jesus the Lord, the ultimate soul winner wasted no time to save even when he was weary. He gave no excuses, like people of today from being weary by the travel. Today preachers travel by cars, airplanes, ship, train and other comfortable sources. Today people have fresh water, air conditioners etc for comfort. Jesus the Christ walked or trekked everywhere he went, no ice or fresh water or air conditioner waiting anywhere for him. The best he had was a colt; but thank God the colt was prophetic. He told the woman, “Give me to drink.”
Be careful to entertain strangers, for some have entertained angels unawares. This woman was having the hour of her visitation; not an angel unawares but the Lord of glory was with her giving her a chance by asking her for a drink: an opportunity to witness to her about salvation. From the start the woman showed both interest and concern. He was a man and a Jew. The Jews and the Samaritans had no dealings. How is it that being a Jew will ask me of a drink of water? Jesus answered her and said: If thou knewest the gift of God, and Who it is that saith to thee, give me to drink; Thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water, (John 4:10).
The woman said, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? Like the woman at the well, we always have a reason to prove why something is impossible, and why a person you see cannot do the unexpected; but you never know when that person could be Jesus. He began to bring out revelations unto her, saying; (John 4:13-14). Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again. But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
The woman said to Jesus Christ, “Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.” Jesus told her to go call her husband. She answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus knew (as God) that she did not have a husband; for she already had five husbands and the one living with her now was not her husband. She was truthful in her answer as the Lord remarked, verse18. She was living in sin and was sincere enough to accept and state her condition without excuses. People today are very ready to give reasons why they have married several times and justify their living in partners; rather than acknowledge their sinful state. When she had the Lord, tell her about her life, she not only accepted but declared, “Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.”
The woman narrated the teachings of their fathers to Jesus, about worshipping in the mountain and even in Jerusalem. Jesus in his mercy enlightened her understanding; explaining to her that salvation is actually of the Jews. Also that the hour to worship the Lord was now and they who worship him must do so in spirit and in truth, for the Father seeketh such to worship him. The woman at the well said to Jesus, I know that Messiah cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. This woman despite her condition remembered the teachings of her fathers, that the Messiah would come and his name will be Christ. There are many people who were taught by the fathers, Sunday school teachers, preachers etc about Jesus the Christ: but do not recollect like the woman at the well. Forgiveness is in the hand of the Lord and he is ever ready to show mercy to a sincere heart. No matter what condition you may be in or going through: you may be the worst sinner, in jail, a murderer, no matter your sin, except for blasphemy against the Holy Ghost; mercy is available in the name and blood of Jesus Christ.
When this woman mentioned about Christ and was looking forward to his coming; unlike many today, she touched a soft sport in the Lord, which is the salvation of the lost. Jesus in his very rare deeds made himself known to the woman at the well; a secret that not many knew about. Jesus said to her, “I that speak unto thee am He.” Jesus introduced himself to this woman that many will consider to be sinful. By his action, he awakened her faith; she accepted her short coming, he brought out her hope and expectation of the Messiah. This woman went out to announce that she had seen the Christ. This woman found forgiveness, was willing to drink the water that the Lord would give to her. She accepted Christ, and it is that simple. She went and witnessed to several people who eventually accepted Jesus the Christ. This can happen to you. Jesus is busy calling people into his kingdom. Has he found you? Did he say to you, “I that speak unto thee I am he, the Christ?” She became an instant evangelist and many were saved to her credit. We shall see her at the translation. Jesus Christ saves and changes lives are you saved and washed in the blood of Jesus? If you are thirsty, come to Jesus Christ and drink of the water of life freely, (Rev. 22:17).
