I MADE A COVENANT WITH MY EYES THAT I MIGHT NOT SINI MADE A COVENANT WITH MY EYES THAT I MIGHT NOT SIN

Job 31:1, refers us to a scripture that is instructive in the way of holiness and righteousness. Job, though was married and suffered losses, knew that with the eyes he could see or look at things that may affect his relationship with God. He decided to take a serious step that amounted to a covenant. A covenant is an agreement, a legal contract that could be formal, solemn and in some cases sacred. It is a binding promise of great importance between two or more people. But here Job entered into an unusual and drastic covenant, between himself and his eyes. You can make such covenants with your ears and tongue too. The bible talks about marriage and for sure marriage is a covenant. The bible says for this reason shall a man leave father and mother and cleave to his wife; and the two become one flesh.

Job went beyond that and set a new standard. This covenant he made was unique. He made a binding agreement with his eyes that involved not thinking upon a maid. He was married and did not want his eyes to involve him in a lustful though, imagination or relationship. It is even very good for the single people to enter such a covenant. No wonder God said to satan in Job 1:3, “Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect man and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? And still he holdeth fast his integrity.” This was the testimony of God, the creator about Job; a man who made a covenant with is eyes. He said, why then should I think upon a maid? He made a covenant with his eyes that he might not end in lust, sin and death.

The eyes is the gate way to the mind, and in all these circuitry, thoughts are the energy forces, both negative and positive. But Proverbs 24:9 reads, “The thought of foolishness is sin.” The eyes opens the flood gate of thoughts and Job made a covenant with them, especially thought of women or maid. How many homes and marriages have been destroyed because of what the eyes saw, uploaded thoughts and many became defiled? It starts with the eyes, to the brain and heart. Remember James 1:14-15, “But every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”

Job spoke to his eyes and made a covenant with them. He wanted to live a clean, holy, pure and godly life, void of controllable acts that lead to sin. Covenant with the eyes is very essential in the Christian race. The eyes see a lot of things and the devil is always around to exploit every situation for your destruction. The thief (devil) comes to steal, kill and destroy, (John 10:10). You need to consciously make a covenant with your eyes, so that both of you will know what is acceptable. You do not have to see a lady or a gentleman, to begin to think or become preoccupied, with thoughts that becomes foolishness. Whether, a life individual or a picture or a movie; when once in your thoughts you become negatively and ungodly occupied with it that becomes foolishness. Some of us fail to realize, when our thought becomes foolishness, which is a sin. Job realized that the gate for such evil was his eyes and decided to take charge of the situation by entering a covenant.

Psalm119:11, “Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee.” That is one way to keep the covenant with your eyes. Meditate on the word of God, they are pure and holy, (Prov.30:5).   According to 1st Cor. 6:15-20, —— Flee fornication, every sin that a man doeth is without the body: but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own. This makes each of us responsible, for how we present our body. Remember, what know ye not that he which is joined to a harlot is one body? For two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. The eyes if not brought into covenant, sees and relays all things, and your mind should filter what it gets; by passing it through the WORD test. Remember Psalm 119:11.

To make a covenant with your eyes, the eyes need to be anointed with eye salve (Rev.3:18). In prayer break every yoke, loose the bands of wickedness, undo the heavy burdens. If you are deep in trouble with your eyes, a fast may also be necessary, (Isaiah 58:6-9) with your covenant.  Remember Heb.12:1. Be determined in your covenant with your eyes, what you watch and set a standard for yourself. You cannot not make a covenant with your eyes and be watching X-rated films, pornography, looking at improperly dressed people, all these must be part of the covenant. Also avoid looking anything twice that can confuse your eyes that leads to lust and finally ends in sin and death, (could be spiritual, or physical or both). You must pray and seek God with determination, when entering into this covenant; because it is not by power nor by might but by My Spirit says the Lord. This covenant with the eyes can only work for those who are saved or born again, by accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. It is a spiritual covenant that manifests itself, as we work and walk in and with the Lord. Job did it, so can we; make a covenant with our eyes. We can also make a covenant with our ears and tongue. This will delivers us from gossips and every careless word. James talked about taming the tongue. Enter a covenant with your tongue. Remember, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath, (James 1:19). Study Mk 9:47; Matt. 6:22-23; Psalm 119:37. Only the Holy Spirit can make the covenant possible if we are saved and yielded to God in Jesus Christ name. Amen.
