Death in all scripture means separation from the purpose for which one was created. There are 3 kinds of death.

Physical death – The separation of the body from the inner man (soul and spirit). The body goes back to dust but the inner man returns to God who decides about that. But if you are saved you have eternal life, immortality in Christ Jesus.

Spiritual death – Separation from God because of sin.

Isaiah 59:2; But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

Col. 2:13; And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

James 2:26; For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Eternal death – eternal separation from God because man chooses to remain separated from God in sin. This is called the second death. or second and final separation from God; the lake of fire.

Matt. 25:41, 46; Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Rev. 2:11; He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

Rev. 21:8; But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Mortal shall put on immortality, but not so for those who died without salvation in Jesus Christ. Hell is an abode of torment and darkness, before going to the lake of fire at the final judgment for sin and rejecting Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
